For most moves, it comes down to one of a few things depending on the type of move:
Local moves (charged by the hour): Labor and time are usually the biggest cost driver. The more crew, hours, and manpower needed to load, transport, and unload, the higher the bill. Anything that slows the crew down (stairs, long carry distances from truck to door, elevator waits, no parking near the entrance) adds directly to the cost.
Long-distance/interstate moves (charged by weight or distance): The biggest factor is typically the weight/volume of your belongings combined with the distance travelled. This is usually the single largest line item on the quote.
Beyond that, a few things reliably push costs up on any move:
- Specialty items: pianos, safes, pool tables, or anything needing extra equipment, crew, or care
- Packing services: having movers pack for you (labor plus materials) can add a meaningful chunk versus packing yourself
- Timing: weekends, month-end, and summer (peak moving season) tend to cost more than off-peak weekday moves
- Valuation/insurance coverage: opting for full-value protection on your belongings adds to the price versus basic released-value coverage
