Moving Day at SFU: What to Know
SFU’s Burnaby Mountain campus has its own rules for move-in day, and it helps to plan around them.
Parking: SFU doesn’t allow parking on campus roadways, only in identified lots with the appropriate permit or decal. On move-in day, follow the signs posted in and near the Residence Main Parking Lot and the West Mall Visitors Parkade. Note that there’s no free parking on the Burnaby campus; all parking is paid, by permit, paystation, or app.
Unloading: Residents of most residence buildings are asked to stay parked in the West Mall Parkade and borrow one of SFU’s moving carts to bring belongings up to their room.
Traffic: The roads up Burnaby Mountain get busy during peak move-in weekends in late August and early September. We plan our arrival times to avoid the worst of it.
Elevator bookings: Many off-campus condo buildings near SFU require you to book the service elevator in advance, and popular move-in dates fill up fast. Check with your building manager or strata as soon as your move-in date is set so you’re not stuck with a leftover time slot.
Measure before you move: A sofa or desk that fits your last place may not fit through a Burnaby apartment’s elevator, hallway, or front door. This catches more students off guard than almost anything else on moving day, and a quick measurement ahead of time saves a lot of frustration.
What Affects the Cost of a Student Move
Moving costs are usually based on crew size, hours worked, and how much you’re moving, rather than a flat fee. A small dorm room move typically needs fewer hours than a full apartment. A few things that help keep costs down:
- Move on a weekday. Tuesday through Thursday are generally less busy than weekends.
- Downsize first. Sell or donate furniture and textbooks you won’t need. Fewer items mean less time on the clock.

When to Book Your Move
Late August through early September is the busiest stretch for SFU moves, as students move in for the Fall semester. April and May see a similar rush as leases turn over. If your move falls in one of these windows, book at least three to four weeks ahead to get your preferred date. Moving mid-semester or mid-month usually means more flexible scheduling and shorter notice.
Metro Vancouver’s rainy season runs from October through March. If your move falls during this stretch, let us know, and we’ll come prepared to protect your belongings and your floors from wet weather.
